Deanna TaubmanDeanna Taubman is a native Californian and was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She received undergraduate degrees in Biology and English and American Literature from Brandeis University in 1991. Deanna worked for a couple of years as a molecular biology research assistant at Harvard University and then went on to pursue a veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania, completed in 1998. In 2001 Deanna left the combined program at Penn in molecular biology and began seriously pursuing studio art in 2004 after relocating to the Bay Area. She has studied with a number of instructors at Skyline College Art Department and is an active member of local arts guilds. Deanna's focus has been in ceramics, printmaking and painting, but letters and words are a common theme across all media.

Artist's Statement

Nothing is ever truly left behind. The past drags along behind you like cans after a newlywed's car, adding cacophonous complexity and a blush of whimsy to the ride while drawing (occasionally unwelcome) attention to itself. You will find plenty of evidence of my past in my work, and of course you are welcome to enjoy the work without any interpretive effort at all, if you're so inclined.

Much of my artwork includes letters and words. Language is holy. It binds people together. It tears people apart. It seeds ideas and squelches freedom. And according to Jewish mysticism, the symbols that comprise language are part of the fabric of the universe. We have no other device as powerful as this. Language is a divine gift, capable of changing everything. It is our duty to know it well, and use it carefully.
